Dear Prospective participant,
My name is Luis Manso, a Lecturer in Computer Science at Aston University. Part of my current research is focused on making people feel more comfortable around moving robots. This is very important for the advance of robotics because, if robots cause discomfort, they are very unlikely to be deployed in real-life applications. To minimise discomfort, it is crucial to develop models able to provide estimates of the appropriateness of any given robot trajectory. Although these models can be handcrafted, machine learning approaches have additional benefits.
Unfortunately, we currently lack the datasets necessary to apply machine learning to this specific problem. The goal of our project is to score videos of robots moving around people to build machine learning-based models to estimate those scores for us. These models will then be leveraged to train and to evaluate algorithms that make the robots move.
We would be grateful to have voluntary participants over the age of 18, to participate in a survey to score of some of these videos. Survey participants will be shown a minimum of 50 videos where a robot moves, and they will provide their personal view on the appropriateness of the behaviour of the robot in the video. The surveys will be completely anonymous.
Should you have any questions about the recordings, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your time.
Kind Regards,
Luis J. Manso
